How does biodiversity affect sustainable development, and how can projects of development cooperation strengthen biodiversity? On behalf of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), INFRAS summarized important background information and policy recommendations for decision makers.
Loss of biological diversity, climate change, and environmental pollution: our ecosystem is confronted globally with massive challenges. To clarify the effect of these factors on development cooperation, INFRAS together with ZOÏ Environment compiled the NEXUS Brief on the theme of “Biodiversity and Sustainable Development” on behalf of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
Consider biodiversity at an early stage of planning
Climate change increasingly threatens biological diversity. Many development cooperation projects already have the objective today of strengthening biodiversity. The problem: these measures are often implemented independently and not well coordinated with climate and environment actvities. The brochure emphasizes the necessity of targeted and coordinated approaches. Among other things, it recommends including multilateral funding instruments and the support of biodiversity at an early stage of planning in the development cooperation projects.
Compact overview for the participants in development cooperation
The brochure targets decision makers in development cooperation: several graphs summarize important background information clearly and concisely – for example the loss of biodiversity and possible countermeasures.
