MONITRAF - Monitoring of road traffic related effects in the Alpine region and common measures

July 21, 2008

In January 2008, representatives of the Alpine regions signed a common solution for a sus-tainable transport policy in the Alps. As a milestone of transport policy, this resolution for the first time defines common measures aiming at a reduction of transalpine freight traffic and its negative impacts. At the same time, the common measures imply a strengthening of common solutions to avoid unwanted traffic shifts between the Alpine corridors. As starting point, the INTERREG project MONITRAF has for the first time developed a common data basis on the impacts of freight traffic in the Alps. On the basis of this picture, INFRAS supported the Central Switzerland Government Conference with the development of a set of main directions which became the basis for the common resolution. To create a sustainable transport solution in the Alpine region, the set of main indicators and main directions does not only recommend measures to improve environmental quality and to support modal shift but also the introduction of an international Alpine Crossing Exchange as an innovative instrument for controlling Alpine freight traffic. In addition, the institutionalisation of a common monitoring is recommended in order to evaluate and optimise the common strategy. To ensure that the measures included in the resolution are effectively implemented and that the network of Alpine regions is maintained, MONITRAF partners aim at continuing their activities in a second project phase. The MONITRAF synthesis report with the common resolution and the report on common measures are available on the MONITRAF homepage.
